There are a lot of weird, incredible spiders out there, but one recently discovered spider is just a little less scary — because he’s very familiar looking.
A group of scientists has discovered a new species of spider in India that looks exactly like the sorting hat from “Harry Potter.”
Luckily, the scientists are Harry Potter nerds and immediately noticed the resemblance and decided to name the newly discovered creature Eriovixia gryffindori. Now that’s a scientific name we can get behind.

“This uniquely shaped spider derives its name from the fabulous, sentient magical artifact, the sorting hat, owned by the (fictitious) medieval wizard Godric Gryffindor, one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and stemming from the powerful imagination of Ms. J. K. Rowling, wordsmith extraordinaire, as presented in her beloved series of books, featuring everyone’s favourite boy-wizard, Harry Potter,” the scientists wrote in the report.
This is probably the only scientific report out there that goes into detail about a fictional book series, which is pretty fantastic.
The team of scientists of course had to share their findings with J.K. Rowling herself, and she was just as thrilled as everyone else about the magical new spider.
An incredibly fantastic beast, indeed.
